Animals on the Edge
29th November 2007
This summer I won a commission to photograph the world’s most endangered species and to document the issues and personal stories of those people affected by and affecting the plight of the natural world. The project will take over two years to complete and will involve assingnments in many locations off the beaten track, including Cameroon, Gabon, Nigeria, Sumatra and Vietnam, as well as some of the more obvious destinations, such as Madagascar, North America, India and North and sub-Saharan Africa.
In so many ways this is the project I have wanted to fulfil since the day I turned professional, some nine years ago. It has been a long time in the planning! I will be working with conservation groups around the world and the project itself will be based on research provided by the Specialist Species Groups of the IUCN World Conservation Union, the organisation responsible for the formal classification of the threat status of all the world’s living organisms.
In the coming weeks and months we will be launching a micro-website that will provide comprehensive detail of the project and its goals, as well as updates on my progress using video feeds from the field, pod-casts and web-blogs. We hope that the site will stimulate interest in the project and provide a platform for public involvement and discussion. More detail about the site will follow shortly.
In the meantime, I am now planning the first of the assignments, which will include trips to North America, India and Vietnam. It’s going to be a busy year!
