Status: Critically Endangered
The core population of western lowland gorillas had until recently an almost continuous distribution in suitable habitat from CAR to the coast. Unlike their mountain cousins, habitat loss is not a major driver of ape decline in this region. Rather, commercial hunting and outbreaks of the Ebola virus have resulted in a population reduction of over 80% in three generations, virtually extirpating gorillas from intact forest habitat. National and international laws controlling hunting exist in all relevant countries, but enforcement of protective legislation is almost non-existent. Urgent conservation efforts are needed if the species is to survive.
