Status: Endangered
Present distribution of barasingha is much reduced and fragmented, due to habitat loss and barely-restrained hunting. A population of c.300-350 of the sub-species branderi survives only in Kanha NP. However, habitat degradation due to grass, timber and fuel-wood cutting by local people is still problematic, as is poaching for antlers and meat. Conservation activities have included dispersal of tigers away from main grazing areas, poaching controls, cessation of grass burning, creation of water reservoirs and a reduction in domestic cattle. Out-migration of villages from the park has significantly extended barasingha habitat, protecting their traditional fawning and rutting grounds.
