Status: Endangered
The tiger once ranged widely across Asia but conversion of forest areas to agriculture, commercial logging and human settlement has resulted in a 93% decrease in its historic range. Where suitable habitat does exist, prey base depletion is a major threat to tiger populations, and persistent poaching of tigers for Asian medicine is driving the species to extinction. There have been numerous and many conservation efforts in recent years but the most effective, according to a recent study, are education of local people and children, and training and better provisions, including financial support, for protected area staff.
