Status: Critically Endangered
Occurring in the Tatra Mountains of Poland and Slovakia, the population of Tatra chamois is thought to be fewer than 200 individuals and declining. Among its major threats are poaching (due to an increase in the availability of firearms), human disturbance, particularly from increased leisure and tourism activity (an estimated 3-million people visit the Tatra National Park each year), and the deliberate introduction of sub-species from diverse geographic regions, leading to hybridisation. If the Tatra chamois is to be conserved, there must be a reduction in illegal hunting, perhaps by protecting parts of the western Tatras, and none-native introductions should be removed.
