In the wake of the tsunami, efforts are underway to establish a second “Ulu Masen” ecosystem along similar lines to Leuser, a major stronghold of the species, incorporating the North East and North West Aceh populations. However, this process is in its early stages and there are already threats to open four large logging concessions the area.
