Status: Endangered
At around 4,080-6,590, snow leopard populations have declined 20% in 16 years. Losses to poaching have been severe and poaching to service the illegal trade is likely to continue, given demand in China. Over-stocking with livestock of the high-altitude grasslands of its central Asian mountains range is widespread, leading to declines in the prey base and an increase in retributive killing when snow leopards turn to livestock. Conservation needs include promoting husbandry practices that reduce livestock vulnerability and improve efficiency and yield; and providing financial incentives to communities for conserving the species, including wildlife-based ecotourism and development of cottage industries.
