Status: Endangered
Proboscis monkeys’ primary habitat is riparian-riverine forest, coastal lowland forest (including mangroves), peat and freshwater swamp forest. These habitats are ideal for logging, cultivation and settlement and accordingly, the major cause for the species decline is habitat destruction. They are also lethargic animals, easily hunted. With little effort entire populations can be hunted to extirpation. Opportunistic hunting for food occurs but the species is also hunted for bezoar stones, an intestinal secretion used in traditional Chinese medicine. In some regions, its legal protection suffers from governmental and institutional deficiencies, including lack of conservation funds and knowledge, and poor and inappropriate management.
