Status: Endangered
Mountain gorillas live in a region of fast growing, high human density, where the need for land poses many threats, including habitat destruction and illegal extraction of forest resources. Poaching, particularly for bush-meat, has also increased and continued civil and political volatility in the region means the gorillas remain vulnerable, despite the efforts of NGO’s and UN observers. A key conservation strategy is tourism, however, there is concern about the risk of disease transmission and undue disturbance. However, overall, groups visited by tourists have consistently fared better than none-habituated groups, due to daily monitoring and increased protection.
