Status: Critically Endangered
Numbering between 84-143, there are insufficient adult Iberian lynx for the species to survive and experts agree that it’s very close to extinction. Populations continue to decline, due to the severe depletion of the primary prey base (rabbit), disease, over-hunting, high unnatural mortality rates (e.g. road deaths), and habitat destruction and fragmentation. To help conserve the species, education and awareness programs help to change attitudes towards the lynx, particularly among landowners, and captive breeding for wild release has started in Spain. Moving forward, priority must be given to maintaining suitable habitat to harbour new populations.
