Status: Endangered
The Amur tiger has made a spectacular comeback since the 1930s, when numbers fell to between 20-30 individuals. A recent census estimates the current population at 331-393 adult/sub-adult tigers, with 90% belonging to one sub-population, the Sikhote Alin, found in the far east of Russia. A second sub-population occurs along the southernmost coast, isolated by the urban area of Vladivostok, but adjoining China’s Critically Endangered population in the Changbai mountains. Overall, the population of Amur tigers is considered stable. However, poaching, human/tiger conflict and prey base depletion continue, with the potential to easily alter the hard-won conservation gains.
