Nikon D3 with 24-70mm AF-S lens set at 24mm. 8-min @ f/8 at ISO 800. Nikon SB800 Speedlight with softbox attachment fired manually.
“I conceived this image while out walking one night. The idea was to show lions under star trails. It is a technically complex image. I used the Bulb setting for an 8-minute exposure for the sky, creating the light trails. The foreground was pitch black - I couldn’t even see my tripod, let alone the lions. To light the foreground at the appropriate moment, I manually fired the flash. Because the duration of the flash is around 1/10,000th sec, that became my shutter speed for the lions, ensuring their movement is sharp.”
